A study published in 2023 revealed that 53.5 per cent of the Togolese population makes use of traditional healers, that 56.2 per cent claims to have witnessed an exorcism, that 71.4 per cent believes in (the existence of) witchcraft, that 79.7 per cent of the population believes in some people’s ability to cast curses and 85.7 per cent claims to know a voodoo believer.
The study in question also argued that ‘traditional’ Togolese are less likely to vote in the elections, but more likely to vote for the ruling party.
It’d be interesting to see how much the situation has changed since, especially in the light of the riots that shook Togo at the end of June
