On January 30, 1911 The New York Times published an article on Leo Frobenius. Frobenius, a German explorer and ethnologist, made the news by claiming that he had found Atlantis. The reason why Frobenius believed Atlantis to be located in West Africa was that he (thought he had) found “an ancient bronze, the head of a man” which bore the insignia of Poseidon-God of the Sea and patron of Atlantis.
